Design Shapes - Photo Quilts

Photo quilts are a nice way to provide memories along with the warmth of a quilt. This above left quilt has 90 photos showing six generations; it was made as a surprise for my mother's 84th birthday and given to her during a family reunion in June 2000. The lap quilt in the middle has not been quilted. The lap quilt above right was commissioned and shows three generations.

After almost a decade of not designing quilts, I returned to quiltmaking using photos as part of the quilts. These were my first few attempts to learn what I would like and not like and what would work or not work. At first I printed directly on the fabric and the second it got damp the photo ran; I discovered photo transfer paper and started using it exclusively as it is much more forgiving. The photos to the left are from scenes we have taken in Labrador West on our digital camera.
